Over 15 years, Hadfield Cawkwell Davidson have been involved with the vast majority of Nuffield’s Fitness & Wellbeing developments and refurbishments. The City Club, in the City of London, is of particular note as it has become a landmark club.

The City Club, located under Cannon Street Station in London, has particularly difficult constraints given the fact that it is built under the arches of a busy operational mainline station, which is also a grade II listed building.

The project involved exceedingly complicated access and working conditions in tight spaces with an ongoing requirement to ensure safe operation and maintenance of fire escapes to both the club and its surrounding neighbours.

Landlord’s requirements restricting allowable works within the railway arches, which means integration of all mechanical and electrical services has to be carefully controlled and the design options are therefore limited.

The nature of the internal environment, and the associated hard surfaces, means that the acoustics of the spaces are very difficult to control. Landlord restrictions with regard to hanging ceilings from the arches mean that we have had to develop creative acoustic solutions such as freestanding acoustic baffles, carefully selected materials and splayed surfaces to avoid flutter echo.

As the club is positioned under a main line rail terminus, vibrations are unavoidable and as such the details of the internal fit-out are designed to take this into account. Items affected generally include partitions, glazed screens, tiled surfaces and fixed furniture items.

Due to the landmark status of the club, the Nuffield brand standard finishes were enhanced to reflect the clubs stature. This included the creation of a state of the art Cycle Studio, Sports Science Lab, Watt Bike Performance Zone and installation of the latest gym equipment on the market.
